Mastershower 2- or 3-way Transfer Valve - Replaces Kohler K-687-K 4.5 5 3 4
Not what I expected Should have read descriptions more carefully. I have a showerhead and a handshower. I was expecting this to be 3-way switching between two showers and 3rd position would be OFF. Instead this rotates 360 degrees clicking into 6 positions, where 2 serve as I expected and others are just mixing both showers. No OFF position. September 1, 2011
Quality Product Installation was straighforward except minor challenge of converting 3/4 inlet down to 1/2" to marry up with existing service line. The 6 way diverter rotates smoothly and positive detent at each position. September 24, 2010
Works smoothly, as advertised I purchased this transfer valve for a bathroom remodel to allow me to switch between a regular fixed shower head and a hand shower. The specs say that it has a 3/4" inlet valve. But if you have the more common 1/2" plumbing, like I do, not to worry - any plumber can easily convert the opening to 1/2". The specs also explain that it can be used as a two-way valve, rather than a 3-way, and this is how mine is set up. In two-way usage, the valve rotation is about 120 degrees - all the way to the right sends water to one fixture, all the way to the left sends it to the other, and halfway in the middle sends it (at somewhat reduced pressure) to both. The valve turns smoothly and evenly, and you can feel a slight "click" when the valve is moved into each of its three positions, which is nice because it lets you know you are in the right place. Like any good rough-in valve, it is buried behind the wall tile after its installed, and it just does what it is supposed to do, without your ever having to think much about it. June 24, 2010

I plan to use this as a 2-way. Can I use the unused 3rd outlet as an off position

The 3rd outlet on the Kohler K-728-K cannot be used as an off position. There is a plug included for 2 way installation.

If I use a separate shut off valve, can this transfer valve be used to select one output between a shower head, a rain head, or a hand shower?

The Kohler K-728-K can be used for that. It diverts water from one outlet to another, be it a rain head, shower head, or hand shower.

If this valve is used as a 3-way, can it run different fixtures at the same time?

The Kohler K-728-K will allow you to run a combination of 2 fixtures at once but not all at once.

Are there instructions on where to place the handle for warm water from the shower head?

Kohler's installation guides are available on each trim kit's product page; they do have suggestions. However, there really isn't a standard distance. You can mount your shower head as far from the handle as you wish as long as they are still on the same pipe line.

does this valve work as a shut off valve also? In other words..can one position be used as shower head, the other a rain water tile fixture and the 3rd position completely turn off all water ?

The Kohler K-728-K is not designed as a cut off. The pressure balanced, mixing valve handle, such as the K-304-K, that must be purchased for a functioning shower serves as the cut off and temperature mixer.

Can this valve be converted from a 3-way to 2-way function at trim out time?

The Kohler K-728-K is made to be used as a 2 OR 3 way diverter. The installation guide here explains the setup for both: http://www.faucet.com/mediabase/specifications/kohlerk728k_inst.pdf
