Measure your center to center

There are quite a few different faucet configurations ranging from single hole to four hole sinks. The sink determines what faucet you can use.  Some faucets are fixed at 4" centers and cannot be changed; typically called centerset or mini-wide spread faucets.  Some faucets are adjustable from 6" - 16" so the spacing between the two outer holes are not as essential; called widespread faucets.  To Measure your centers you will want to measure from the middle of the two OUTSIDE holes.  Here are a couple of examples and common sizes:
